We are very happy to invite you to a studio sharing of Thresh's new work, Savitri - Journey in Eternal Night.
Date: June 8th 2011
Time: 8:10pm (till 9pm including discussion) - please arrive by 8pm
Venue: Alvin Ailey studios,
405 West 55th Street
New York, NY 10019
(212) 405-9056
Thank you so much for your ongoing support!
About the Evening:
We welcome you to Savitri: Journey in Eternal Night. We are very excited to be with you in a studio setting to share with you our creative process. The work so far represents a collaboration of two years of vocal and dance improvisation. This is our 'first unveiling' to a select group who can dialogue with us after the sharing. We feel that your input will help us in the next dimension as we enter the production phase with more music composition, direction, lighting, costumes and scenic ideas.
Savitri, a poem by Sri Aurobindo is a wonderful example of 20th century poetic aesthetic melding a deep Indian metaphysical thought with English verse writing. It represents an amalgamation of ancient wisdom with modern language.
Both Kyra and I have approached it from our own sources - our classical roots (Indian classical dance for me, western classical singing and jazz vocal improvisation for Kyra) and have been exploring the form alongside the interpretation of the poem shifting from the representational to abstract and linear to non-linear. John Hadfield, our sound designer and music collaborator has been working on the environment sounds that surround the performers. The sound-scape has been inspired by the text and the relationship between the characters, especially Satyavan and the formless Death.
There are two main characters, Satyavan and Savitri. Each has a relationship with formless Death. Satyavan is the soul carrying the Divine Truth lost in death and ignorance and finds himself located in the mundane. Savitri is the Divine Word who comes to save and debates the Formless with form. Their journey as mortals debating with an immortal (Death) forms our work - Journey in Eternal Night.

Genre-breaking variety of musicians and other artists from a wide array of backgrounds. The series will feature world-class musicians — not to mention Grammy-nominated — in rock, bluegrass, pop, jazz, folk and classical genres, as well as visual artists, comedians, and dancers in a kind of creative free-for all. GALA NYC serves as a platform for artists to collaborate and connect with one another, and with the audience, in a unique and spontaneous way. Their collaborations could be an original composition or a reinterpretation of existing music, but audiences will hear something they’ve never heard before. The one-of-a-kind series is anchored and developed by Juilliard-trained cellist and composer Mike Block, hailed by Yo Yo Ma as “the ideal 21st century musician.’”
The first four shows will take place May 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 8 PM, with
tickets costing $15 in advance and $18 at the door. A full season of
twice-monthly shows will begin in September and run through May, 2012.

Tabla, the traditional Indian set of two hand drums, appears so simple. But the sounds it makes can be as nuanced and expressive as the hands and mind that touch it. New York's Suphala, a young and versatile protégé of the great tabla masters Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, lets her training in classical piano and improvisational performance style pour out through this remarkable instrument. At The Monsoon Club, Suphala will be joined by clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, trumpeter Amir Elsaffar, and percussionists Matt Kilmer and John Hadfield.

Oh Sky White Tiger Night with Fancy Colors / Behavior / Sky White Tiger
Featuring Brooklyn-based bands, DJs, video and indie fashion.
Brooklyn's own, Sky White Tiger, led by Louis Schwadron (former member of The Polyphonic Spree and Rufus Wainwright's band), presents the first annual "Oh Sky White Tiger Night" featuring Brooklyn-based bands, DJs, video and indie fashion at 92YTribeca.
Inspired by works of astrological mythology and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality, five-piece psych-pop band Sky White Tiger formed in Brooklyn in 2009. After a decade of writing, recording, touring and collaborating with artists as far reaching as David Bowie, Sufjan Stevens and Yo-Yo Ma, the five lifelong Tiger brethren decided to take matters into their own paws. After a batch of supporting US tour dates with Rufus Wainwright and a few months in the studio with Brooklyn-based producer Bryce Goggin, Sky White Tiger has recently completed tracking for their debut LP to be released in 2011. Whether performing on a concert stage, in an art gallery or planetarium dome, Sky White Tiger fuses sound, costume and light design, transforming any space into the Tiger realm of the endless imagination.
Also on the bill are Fancy Colors. Featuring former members of Jupiter One, Fancy Colors plays lush and dreamy folk rock from their forthcoming album Near Equator..

Formed in 2006 in New York City, Kinan Azmeh’s CityBand immediately gained recognition for their virtuosic and high energy performance, receiving praise from such sources as the New York Times' Vivien Schweitzer, who deemed the segment, "the highlight of the evening." Azmeh's impressive resume includes performances in Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Moscow, and Damascus, both as a soloist and composer. With this New York ensemble, he strives to reach a balance between classical music, jazz, and the music of his homeland, Syria. Azmeh's expressive clarinet meets Kyle Sanna's rustic guitar, soaring at times over the dynamic and volatile backdrop of John Hadfield's percussion and Josh Myers' double bass. Each band member has come from varied backgrounds to add their personal flair to this ensemble, resulting in a thoroughly exciting and rewarding listening experience.

New York, NY, USA
New York, NY – MAYA, the trio of John Hadfield, percussion; Jacqueline Kerrod, harp;Sato Moughalian flute, will be presented by JudsonArts, at
55 Washington Square South, New York, in a program of new works, featuring four world-premiere performances on Tuesday, June 8 at 8 PM. Admission is free. A reception follows the concert.
The program includes the premiere of ASKLEPIOS by the Spanish composer Gabriel Erkoreka, winner of the Premio Reina Sofia 2007, Spain’s highest honor for composers, and the first MAYA commission to be published internationally, by Oxford University Press. Also receiving its first performance is different voices together, a multimedia work by the American-Israeli composer Yotam Haber incorporating 38 recordings of cantors from the Tempio Maggiore, Rome’s central synagogue, recorded in the 1940s and 50s--a collection unearthed by the composer in 2008. Also featured is The Book of Goddesses, a nine-movement work by the New York composer Robert Paterson, inspired by the book of the same name by Brooklyn artist/writer Kris Waldherr. MAYA percussionist John Hadfield is represented by two works: Theoretical Wall, for Garrahand, an electronic, tunable Argentinian tongue drum, and laptop with Abelton Live, as well as Sisters, a work written for MAYA in 2008. Sound design is by Tom Beyer. All the composers will be in attendance.
The concert is a co-presentation of JudsonArts, Michael Conley, Director, and Perspectives Ensemble. Generous support for these commissions came from The New York State Council on the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the American Composers Center, and the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Additional support for the performance comes from the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation and The Foundation for Iberian Music.

A vibrant evening of film, dramatic readings and musical performance.
For women growing up in Pakistan's patriarchal, segregated society, it is not surprising that female friendships take on a deep, enduring resonance. Yet what happens to these friendships? Hajira shoots herself. Saira has a nervous breakdown. Madina abuses her husband. And Samina’s body is found abandoned on a bench.

The meeting in New York of two musicians who share love for improvisation; in their music one can hear Mediterranian echoes: from Italy to Balkans through North Africa, searching for a musical concept of the "South"
Mauro Pagani made his debut in music in 1970 as violinist, flautist and founding member of the rock band " Premiata Forneria Marconi", later embarking on a successful solo career that led him to play with some of the important Italian singer songwriters, from Vecchioni and Nannini to De Andre' himself. In 1989 the album "Creuza de Ma" (composed with De Andre') was voted the best Italian record of the past fifty years and today it is considered a landmark of "world music" In April 2009, he published his first book "Foto di gruppo con chitarrista" (Group photo with guitarist) for Rizzoli Editore. He also participated in the project "Domani 21.04.09 Artisti Uniti per l'Abruzzo" (Tomorrow 21.04.09 Artists for Abruzzo) together with other 56 other artists. He re-edited his song "Domani" (Tomorrow) written in 2003, and recorded it for charity, with the purpose of collecting funds for the reconstruction of the Conservatorio "Alfredo Casella" and of the "Teatro Stabile d'Abruzzo" in L'Aquila.

Kinan Azmeh's City Band at Riverside Church
11.15.09 |8pm
New York
Formed in 2006 in New York City, Kinan Azmeh’s CityBand immediately gained recognition for their virtuosic and high energy performance, receiving praise from such sources as the New York Times's Vivien Schweitzer, who deemed the segment, "the highlight of the evening." Azmeh's impressive resume includes performances in Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Moscow, and Damascus, both as a soloist and composer.
